Ostrava, the third largest city in the Czech Republic, is situated in the northeast of the country and forms the heart of the Moravian-Silesian region. It is located close to the Slovak and Polish borders on the banks of Ostravice River and offers beautiful views of the Beskydy Mountains.
As mining industry has been part of a city’s industry since the 19th century, Ostrava gained not really flattering nickname “Black Ostrava” or “Steel Heart of the Republic” for the large heavy industry production. However, times have changed and current Ostrava is a fast developping city with vibrant cultural life. Ostrava is also the European City of Sport for the year 2014.
