International Student Club of the University of Ostrava, is a student club operating under the auspices of the Prorector for the management of science and external relations. Its existence is dependent on the volunteer activities of students from University of Ostrava. Club is part of multinational organization ESN (Erasmus Student Network), which provides professional collaboration with other Czech and foreign clubs, and club also confirms its own importance at the university and in the city itself.
The main goal of ISC is to create a friendly integration of foreign students into the unknown Czech environment and participate in multicultural interaction at the university campus, as well as in Ostrava and its surroundings. The club organizes a range of international leisure activities, helping to eliminate barriers between Czech and foreign students and also positively promoting our city and the Czech Republic in general.
Activities of ISC OU are visible throughout the academic year. Preparations begin before the arrival of Erasmus students, this is the main task for the Buddy System, consisting of personal assistance provided by a local student to their international colleague. Volunteers contact their student friends beforehand to agree on the final details, then pick them up on arrival to take them on a tour of the city and the university and to accompany them to their halls of residence. These “buddies” stay in touch for the remainder of the visiting students’ stay, with the local student often proving an invaluable source of advice and information to their international friend.
One of the most important and challenging activities at the beginning of the academic year is the Orientation week. Within one week, a festive opening Ceremony is held with a foreword by Prorector, where students learn all the necessary information. Club helps students to handle with all the necessary documents, this day is called Formalities day. Next organized event in this week is Ostrava tour with a traditional Czech dinner and presentation of the Czech Republic at the “welcome party” – Czech national evening. The week is crowned with Get to Know Each Other weekend, when students spend a weekend together with a varied program in a holiday resort near Ostrava.
We are preparing for Erasmus students a rich program during the semester, which make their stay here more enjoyable. We organize thematic party every second Monday and once a month, party Nation4Nation is held, where students represent their country and prepare traditional specialties to taste. ISC OU offers trips to tourist attractions nearby Ostrava, and now also the “challenging” trips, such as climbing center, river rafting or hiking. The program is continuously extended during the year, and we are inventing new and new activities such as Erasmus Day, Movie Night, Sport tournament and Language Tandem. Members of the International Student Club are trying to offer the highest quality and varied program to make an unforgettable stay for incoming students.
